Western Australia to uphold strong vaping restrictions

Media statement: 30 September 2024

Heart Foundation supports Western Australia's tough action to restrict vape sales

The Heart Foundation welcomes Western Australia's move to uphold strong vaping restrictions, ensuring continued protection against the harmful effects of e-cigarettes.

Despite new Commonwealth regulations allowing the sale of vapes through pharmacies without a prescription, WA's decision to maintain strict regulations sends a clear message about the risks of vaping.

The Heart Foundation’s General Manager, Western Australia, Dr Helena Viola applauds the state’s proactive approach.

We know that any use of e-cigarettes is linked to a 33% higher risk of heart attack compared to those who have never vaped. Young people who vape are three times more likely to start smoking than their peers who don’t. This decision will help protect both adults and children from the harmful impacts of vaping.

The Heart Foundation strongly supports measures that prioritise public health, and WA’s commitment to keeping current restrictions is crucial in preventing a new generation of nicotine addiction.

"This step by Western Australia strengthens our national efforts and ensures that vaping is only available under the strict guidance of healthcare professionals, helping those who wish to quit smoking in the most effective way possible," Dr Viola said.

If you are smoking or vaping and would like to quit, please contact Quitline or speak with your doctor.
