Dr. Bakris is a Nephrologist/Certified Hypertension Specialist trained at the Mayo Clinic and the University of Chicago Medicine. He is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Am. Heart Assoc. Comprehensive Hypertension Centre at the University of Chicago Medicine. He has published over 900 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in diabetic kidney disease, hypertension, and nephropathy progression. He is the Editor or Co-Editor of 23 books in the areas of Diabetic Kidney Disease Progression and Hypertension. Additionally, he is the Co-Editor of the 3rd and new 4th edition of Hypertension: A Companion to Braunwald’s: The Heart. He has served on the FDA Cardiorenal Advisory Board and consultant to CMS. He has also served on many national guideline committees, including The Joint National Committee JNC 7 writing group, the ADA Clinical Practice Guideline Committee.
Professor Merlin Thomas is a clinician scientist and program leader in the Department of Diabetes at Monash University. He is also founder and Chief Scientific Officer of RAGE Biotech Ltd that is commercializing his discoveries. Dr Thomas is renowned as a researcher, educator and medical storyteller with over 300 peer-reviewed publications, as well as author of bestselling books, “The Longevity List” and “Fast Living Slow Ageing”. He is also recognized as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health Medical Science. His research program is focused on understanding the mechanisms of diabetic complications and developing new opportunities for their prevention and treatment.
Professor William Majoni is a Senior Staff Specialist in Nephrology and Internal Medicine and Director of Renal Services for Top End Health Service at the Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospitals in Darwin, Australia. He is also a Clinical Fellow with the Menzies School of Health Research, an adjunct Professor with Charles Darwin University and A/Prof with the Flinders University Northern Territory Medical Program. His research interests include Indigenous health, the epidemiology of renal, infectious, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, access to transplantation and clinical trials to improve the evidence base for treatment of renal, infectious, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Dr Alison Edwards has been a rural GP in Port Broughton South Australia for nearly 30 years. She was Clinical Chair of the Australian Primary Care Collaborative Wave 10 2014-2015 focused on chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease screening, prevention & management. She has been drowning in COVID-19 mitigation, immunisation and management for the last few years but still tries to keep a watchful eye on those with chronic health conditions and associated risk factors to keep her local community as healthy as possible. She is also Event Director for her local Port Broughton parkrun.
