Course overview

The Six Steps to Cardiac Recovery e-learning module provides guidance to nurses and healthcare professionals on the key areas to cover in learning conversations with patients who have been hospitalised with a recent Acute Coronary Syndromes diagnosis.

Six Steps course participant

The course is divided into six comprehensive sections:

  1. Diagnosis and procedure
  2. Highlight risk factors
  3. Emphasise cardiac rehabilitation and activity
  4. Promote medication adherence
  5. Educate on warning signs of heart attack
  6. Follow up with doctor

Each section allows you to explore why these topics are important to cover with your patients, provides the evidence base, and how-to tips. The course is developed to suit a variety of engaging learning styles including informative videos, text and activities to reflect on effective approaches for patient conversations.

This module has been designed to: 

  • Support healthcare professionals working in cardiac units in hospitals to use the Heart Foundation’s Six Steps to Cardiac Recovery Conversation Guide 
  • Summarise the evidence behind why each step is important 
  • Build healthcare professional’s confidence to facilitate effective bedside education after a heart attack and/or angina (coronary heart disease) diagnosis 
  • Introduce the Heart Foundation’s programs and resources available to support your patients, including the MyHeart MyLife patient support program. 
  • Inspire healthcare professionals to embrace their role in education discussions to support patients and their families to achieve optimal long term heart health outcomes.
