2024 Golden Shoe Award winners

Media release: 26 June 2024

Local walking champions honoured

The Heart Foundation has announced the recipients of the 2024 Golden Shoe Award, recognising outstanding contributions and dedication to walking groups across Australia.

The annual award is bestowed upon a select group of volunteer Heart Foundation Walking (HFW) organisers who shine in their local communities by helping to support new and seasoned walkers. Walking has been shown to improve physical fitness, heart health and mental wellbeing.

“These remarkable walk group leaders have significantly enhanced their communities by volunteering their time to fostering health, friendship, and a sense of belonging through walking,” Community Walking Lead Teresa Gadaleta said.

Walking continues to be something that empowers so many people – especially for those who may otherwise miss out on exercise and socialising with others. Heart Foundation Walking is Australia’s largest free walking network.

Community Walking Lead

For nearly 30 years, the Heart Foundation has helped support more people to be active and has grown to be a national movement. Heart Foundation Walking has helped people to not only connect with their local community but has also helped them to lead a heart-healthy lifestyle, managing and preventing heart disease.

Ms Gadaleta said the Heart Foundation’s walking groups reached many parts of Australia, including groups in remote and sparsely populated regions. She said walkers reported that group walking helped their physical, mental and social wellbeing.

“Walking for an average of 30 minutes or more a day can lower the risk of heart disease and stroke by 35 per cent and Type 2 diabetes by 40 per cent,” Ms Gadaleta said.

“It’s not just your heart and muscles that benefit from walking - it also helps improve our daily mood, which cumulatively leads to better mental health.”

2024 Golden Shoe award winners

Golden Shoe Award winners will receive a special golden shoe pin, a certificate and a $250 VISA gift card.

Beverley Morrissey, known to all simply as ‘Bev’, is an 82-year-old dynamo from the Point Cook Walkers. Bev has been walking with HFW since 2010 and is celebrated for her tireless dedication to her group, where she is the sole Australian-born member. She has not only motivated her walkers to increase their steps but also helped them learn English. Bev’s organisational skills and personal care have fostered friendship and community spirit among the local elderly residents.

Gail Eckford of the Kincumber Walkers has been a beacon of connection and support for nearly nine years. Her heartfelt efforts have alleviated loneliness for many, especially single women. Gail’s inclusive nature and exceptional organisational skills, including monthly morning teas and various outings, have made a significant impact, making her a well-deserved recipient of the Golden Shoe Award.

Bonny Clarke from the Australia Fair Walking Group in Southport has been with HFW for five years. Bonny is renowned for her kindness, thoughtful organisation of social activities, and her ability to unite individuals from diverse backgrounds. Her initiatives have led to firm friendships and even a marriage, showcasing her pivotal role in fostering a strong sense of community.

Patricia Pillings of the Mandurah Happy Hearts Walking Group is celebrated for her exceptional dedication, even while undergoing cancer treatment. Pat, along with her husband Colin, has organised walks for 12 years, promoting strong friendships and community bonding. Her resilience and constant encouragement have inspired many, making her an angel and a legend in the eyes of her walkers.

Paul Hunt facilitates three walking groups in Tuggeranong and has been a part of HFW for eight years. Known for his kindness, support, and ability to encourage all walkers, Paul’s efforts in organising coffee catchups and ensuring no one is isolated have created a positive and inclusive walking community.

Ninety-year-old Dean Rowe from the Aldinga Esplanade Walkers has been with HFW for nearly 20 years. With over 4738 walks, Dean is a pillar of the community, always welcoming new walkers and organizing annual Christmas events. His dedication extends beyond walking as he also volunteers for Park Run and raises money for ovarian cancer in memory of his late wife.

Pam Saisell of the Darwin City Steppers, though relatively new to HFW, has already made a significant impact. Her efforts in planning varied walks and creating an inclusive environment have quickly won the hearts of her walkers. Pam’s dedication to ensuring enjoyable and interesting walks has been a cornerstone of her group’s success.

Dianne Walkley leads the Sorell Walking Around Group and Sorell Nordic Walking. Since joining HFW in 2021, Dianne has gone above and beyond to organise enjoyable and safe walks for her group. Her commitment to making every walker feel important and her tireless behind-the-scenes work have made her an indispensable part of her walking community.

The Heart Foundation Walking congratulates all the Golden Shoe Award recipients for their incredible contributions and dedication. Their efforts have not only improved physical health but also strengthened community ties and enhanced the quality of life for many.
