Systems of care in cardiac emergencies

Associate Professor Dion Stub, Monash University

2021 Future Leader Fellowship

Years funded: 2022-2025

The cardiac emergencies of cardiac arrest and heart attack continue to be a major challenge, with unacceptably high mortality and morbidity. Best outcomes are seen when systems of care integrating pre-hospital and hospital care are optimized. Associate Professor Dion Stub's research team involves the collaboration of Ambulance Victoria, with hospital based cardiac clinical registries, allowing for the unique opportunity to perform pragmatic registry based clinical trials, and explore novel treatments in patients with cardiac emergencies.

Associate Professor Dion Stub's research team will lead clinical trials in acute myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock and cardiac arrest. These trials will explore long held assumptions regarding pain management in myocardial infarction, investigate systems of care in cardiogenic shock and novel means of defibrillation in cardiac arrest. Together these trials aim to improve therapies in patients who currently have poor outcomes.
