One-third of Australians who go to hospitals because of chest pain are found to have no significant heart problems. Their often-overlooked pain can even lead to a heart attack and take their lives. This invisible disease, called “coronary microvascular spasm” by clinicians, is related to the micro-vessels of the heart that cannot be seen using traditional clinical methods, and hence it remains unknown. This means that some patients do not receive the treatment that they need, which may lead to a heart attack.
